The Olympics are a little more than half over, and if you think you’ve heard Cal and Stanford mentioned with some frequency during the broadcasts, you’re not mistaken. 93 athletes participating in these games attended one of the two schools – 50 from Cal, 43 from Stanford. That’s a sizeable percentage of the 555 athletes on Team USA.
Our athletes aren’t just showing up, they are winning medals. In fact, yesterday SB Nation said at the halfway point of the Olympics, Stanford had won gold in eight different events. That would make it the fourth-ranked “country” in the world. The only countries with more gold medals at the time were: the US (24), China (13), and Great Britain (10).
Time maybe for a new chant, “Northern Cal, Northern Cal, Northern Cal!”
